FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
FOR THE 2010 STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION

Q. The design challenge states that Theater area should enable the chefs to dip seasonal fruits, create pastries, and display the finished products.” We interpret this to mean that to “create pastries” involves flour, milk, eggs and baking. So in essence a mini kitchen with a stove and oven are required. Is that correct?

A. No. The theatre area is only for the dipping and presentation of products.

Q. "On the go drinks" area, will these drinks be pre-bottled/pre-made and thus require a refrigerated case or will the drinks be made to order?

A. This area can be considered a combined area where a guest can pick up drinks or have them made to order.

Q. The program info mentions that "large format graphics" need to be accommodated. What are these? Large posters? Ads?

A. Any printed media that can be positioned in the store environment. This can be card stock posters, light boxes, duratrans, or digital graphics.

Q. We do not submit any actual material samples, only scans, correct?

A. Correct. The deliverable is a twelve page, 8 ½ “ x 14” bound hardcopy document or booklet for the store design category and a 8.5 x 11" submission for the visual merchandising category.

Q. The design criteria says to use ceiling heights from 10 – 11 feet. Can just the storefront on the mall/exterior side be higher than 10 – 11 feet?

A. The ceiling height is 10 – 11 feet, both interior and exterior.

Q. In the visual merchandising category, does the concept need to be called Godiva Express?
A. You can provide your cool name suggestions or keep the area called Godiva Express.

Q. Should both a rendered and un-rendered version of the storefront be provided?
A. Please supply a rendered version of the storefront.

Q. The design challenge asks for a mood and image board. Should two separate boards be provided?
A. One mood board is required.

Q. Can the interior elevations and floor plan be rendered?
A. Yes.

Q. Can there be more than two interior elevations?
A. Yes, but remember that the entry is limited to 12 total pages (6 double-sided pages or 12 single-sided pages).

Q. Almost all of the fixtures I am planning to use will be custom, thus no cut sheets. Do you need a drawing of each with details on construction/dimensioning?
A. We require fixture details that include dimensioning.

Q. Is the space dedicated to drinks on-the-go separate from the other drink serving area?
A. Yes, the space for drinks on-the-go is separate from the other drink serving area.

Q. Does a backroom or storage room need to be incorporated into the design?
A. No.

Q. Can I submit 12 back-to-back pages as my entry?
A. No, each entry is limited to 12 pages (12 single-sided pages or 6 back-to-back pages).

Q: Can students work on the visual merchandising or store design project in teams?
A: No, the PAVE Student Design Competition is for individual student entries only.

Q: Can graduate students participate in the competition?
A: No, the competition is not open to graduate students.

Q: Does a restroom need to be incorporated into the design?
A: No, a restroom is not needed.

Q. Can students submit entries in both the visual merchandising and store design categories?
A. No, students should chose either the visual merchandising or the store design category and submit one entry.
