3D Design Challenge for Students

The 2012-13 design challenge was to design a functional headphone fixture and include a 3D rendering of the design for judging. As sponsor and presenter, Malden, Mass.-based Van Stry Design worked with the students with the top 12 designs to produce prototypes of their designs, which were displayed April 16-18 at GlobalShop 2013, where industry professionals got a firsthand look at the work of tomorrow’s talent.

The 2012-2013 winning projects are as follows:

The Challenge

Design and create a 3D model or rendering of a store fixture that communicates an existing brand of headphone. The design should invite customers to walk up to it, try on headphones, and walk away informed and delighted by the interaction. The focus should be on the product, because at the end of the day, this is visual MERCHANDISE-ing. Floor space is currency on the selling floor, so keep your footprint to a maximum of 36 by 36 inches wide and 84 inches high. You may choose from any of the ever-growing headphone manufacturers currently on the market, including in-ear, noise-canceling, over-ear, wireless, and gaming, to name a few. The professionalism and detail should parallel that of the chosen brand throughout the entire design. This fixture represents THEIR brand and what the brand would present to the world. Most of all, have fun and put on your 3D thinking cap. Remember, the winning designs will actually be produced at full size, so even if your idea is completely unique, which we encourage, it must also be functional and realizable.

Judging and Awards

A panel of industry professionals (retailers, designers, manufacturers, etc.) selected the top 12 designs. Prototypes were be produced at full scale by Van Stry Design and displayed at GlobalShop 2013 in Chicago, April 16-18, 2013. Winners were announced at GlobalShop, and the awards were presented at the A.R.E. Design Awards in Chicago on April 16, 2013. Photographs of the prototypes for the winning entries will be posted in April 2013.
